Inflorescence
"inflorescence, in a flowering plant, a cluster of flowers on a branch or a system of branches. An inflorescence is categorized on the basis of the arrangement of flowers on a main axis (peduncle) and by the timing of its flowering (determinate and indeterminate)."
This field of glow-in-the-dark flowers installed along the West Toronto Rail Path delights daytime and night-time visitors alike. Each 'flower' is a hand-made steel spike, with each end wrapped and hand-painted in glow-in-the-dark pigmented polymer, and "planted" along the edges of the busy multi-use path. This project is a play on real flowering plants, which collect UV light during the day to perform photosynthesis, release CO2 at night, and show their bright colours during the day. The chemistry of the glow-in-the-dark pigment means these metal "flowers" also collect energy during the day, but they happen to glow at night.
