Gerrard India Bazaar Public Art

In Partnership with the City of Toronto’s Winter Activation Program and the Gerrard India Bazaar BIA, artists were invited to submit proposals for permanent art installations that spanned from Gerrard Street East from Coxwell to Glenside Avenue. These installations highlighted South Asian culture as they provided light and beauty to the Gerrard Street East streetscape.

Dancer and Weaver are made from neon pink acrylic sheets with strategic cutouts. At night, the silhouettes of cultural symbols are illuminated by a frame with inlaid strip lighting. The cutouts emphasize key moments in the design, using the black of the night sky as a contrasting colour against the bright pink of the acrylic material.

The artwork was created, designed by Reesha and Alpesh. They worked together with a contractor to help refine the design and prepare it for installation.  The artwork was installed as permanent fixtures on the pedestrian light poles in the BIA. This allowed for the creation of a bright outdoor gallery that lets pedestrians enjoy the installations year-round, day and night, while they explore South Asian culture along Gerrard.
